World Polio Day marks a major milestone towards polio eradication
Wild polio-virus type 3 has been globally eradicated in a statement made by The independent Global Commission for the Certification of Poliomyelitis Eradication (GCC) .
This announcement came today on World Polio Day and is considered to be a significant breakthrough in the global efforts aiming at eradicating the world of all polio-virus strains. The main goal however, is to guarantee that no child will ever suffer from paralysis caused by polio-virus around the world.
Wild polio-virus type 3 has not been detected anywhere in the world since 2012 and type 2 was declared eradicated in September 2015, with the last virus detected in India in 1999.
